Original prints (albumen, cartes-de-visite, cabinets, etc.) copy prints, postcards, half-tones, engravings and selected copy negatives prepared by the repository staff. The bulk of the collection was compiled by Walter Mason Camp (1867-1925) and pertains almost exclusively to the Indian Wars of North America from 1865 to 1890. Aerial photographs taken by R. N. Wathen, Jr. and those donated by Harold Schindler are also found in the collection.

Custer's paternal ancestors, Paulus and Gertrude Küster, came to the North American English colonies around 1693 from the Rhineland in Germany, probably among thousands of Palatines whose passage was arranged by the English government to gain settlers in New York and Pennsylvania. Born in 1867, Walter Mason Camp was a civil engineer who worked for the railroad and spent many summers traveling throughout the country interviewing various participants and survivors of the Indian wars. He died in 1925.
